A week-long journey to explore the city differently, between hidden lanes, foodie markets and off-the-beaten-path experiences.
Seven days are plenty to go beyond the must-sees and sample the true character of the city. This itinerary alternates distinctive neighborhoods, delicious eateries, and quirky discoveries, with enough flexibility to wander according to the weather and your plans. Each day is crafted around a district, to minimize travel and to enjoy on foot or by bike.
Pack a transit card for rainy days, sturdy shoes for the Plateau's stairs, and a hearty appetite for the markets. Here, day by day, is how to get the most out of a full week.
Day 1: Old Montreal's offbeat side
Start with the historic core, but quickly leave the big squares behind. Take the underground city to connect the stations without ever stepping outside, then climb the Clock Tower for a free panorama of the river.
At the end of the day, the Old Port's zipline sails over the Bonsecours Basin, and the cobbled lanes behind the basilica offer a hushed, queue-free vibe. Reserve a dinner in a vaulted 19th-century cellar to cap the day in style.
Day 2, Plateau-Mont-Royal
A day of wandering among winding staircases, hidden green alleyways, and colorful storefronts. Stop by Leonard Cohen's mural, treat yourself to a picnic at La Fontaine Park, and then try a neighborhood microbrewery.
Day 3, Creative Mile End
The hub for artists and video game studios is revealed through its monumental murals, vintage shops, and, above all, the friendly bagel rivalry. Taste the two legendary bagel shops and decide for yourself.
Day 4, Mount Royal and Its Secrets
Hike up to the lookout via wooded trails rather than by road. On Sundays, the tam-tams set the rhythm at the foot of the hill. The nearby cemetery, vast and peaceful, is explored like an unexpected arboretum.
Day 5, Markets and Flavours
Head to Jean-Talon Market for an impromptu lunch along the stalls, then Little Italy for a strong espresso. Finish with a stroll through the Portuguese neighbourhood and its quiet churches.
Day 6, Griffintown and the Canal
This up-and-coming neighborhood blends lofts, galleries, and riverside eateries along the water. Rent a kayak or a bike to follow the Lachine Canal to Atwater Market, a foodie stop perfect for a basket of local goodies.
Day 7, Science and Nature
Dedicate the last day to the east end of the island. The Botanical Garden, the Biodôme and the Insectarium make for a joyful nature immersion, perfect when the weather is uncertain. A final drink on a terrace in the Village caps off the week.
Practical tips
- Getting around, opt for walking and biking in the summer, the metro in winter.
- Reservations, popular tables and activities fill up fast on weekends.
- Pace, keep half a day free for spontaneous discoveries.
